Like speaking, breathing is a foundational component to singing. Prior to lessons together, a current adult voice student experienced voice lessons with other teachers who focused on music literacy, tonal accuracy, & singing a song correctly according to the sheet music. Yet, this student had no understanding of how their voice worked or what the inner sensations of singing could feel like in their body. As they shared their previous experiences with me in our first lesson together, I knew right away that our first focus would be body awareness & breath connection to grow their vocal confidence, personal agency, but most importantly their knowledge of how the voice actually works.
They started their first lesson laying on the floor in savasana while I coached them through a three part breath exercise. Once they found a connection to the body sensations they were experiencing with this kind of breathing, their voice grew leaps & bounds in a short amount of time. The three part breath, or Dirgha pranayama, allows you to deepen the breath which in turn allows the mind & body to calm, shifting you into a relaxation response akin to the rest & digest state. Additionally, this pranayama practice creates maximum expansion in the torso allowing for the most fullness from which to empty the exhale.
